Advising is a shared responsibility between the student and adviser. Advisers motivate students to set and accomplish educational and professional goals. The student is ultimately responsible for decisions on academic goal setting, course registration and academic performance.

Adviser responsibilities

  • Assist students in selecting courses each semester that efficiently fulfill degree requirements.
  • Help students make informed decisions through awareness of resources and opportunities offered by The University of Alabama and the College of Engineering.
  • Develop a strong working relationship with students to ensure academic success.
  • Be familiar with UA policy and procedure as well as with programs offered to students in the College of Engineering.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources such as the Counseling Center, CAS, Financial AidStudy Abroad Office as needed.
  • Provide students with academic guidance about degree requirements, major curriculum, changing majors and colleges along with any changes to the College of Engineering curriculum or policy.
  • Be accessible. Encourage students to set up appointments with their individual adviser during the semester to answer and address any questions or concerns.

Student responsibilities

  • Familiarize yourself with DegreeWorks and your major’s flowchart. It is essential that you are aware of curriculum requirements and stay informed concerning the path to graduation.
  • Schedule and attend advising appointments throughout the semester. Do not wait until the day you are supposed to register for courses to come see your adviser. Meet with your adviser before you select classes.
  • Notify your adviser if you encounter any problems that affect your academic performance so that we may help guide you.
  • Come prepared to your advising appointment. Work out a tentative class schedule, review DegreeWorks and bring questions with you. Let your adviser know of your interests and goals – both academic and professional.
